From a little kid fishing the banks with his grandfather to competing with the best anglers in the world, Destin’s passion for bass fishing has taken him on an amazing adventure that he continues to this day. Destin’s career in the tournament ranks began at the local club level in Western Pennsylvania late in college after suffering a serious knee injury on the football field. As a lifelong athlete, he has always craved competition and needed a new focus after his football career was ending.
When Destin was very young his grandfather would take him fishing; when they couldn’t hit the water they would get up early on the weekends to watch fishing shows. His passion for bass fishing was created throughout those times with his grandfather. His grandfather wasn’t a fisherman until later in life and they mostly used live bait at the local fishing holes. The older Destin got, the more he would experiment with artificial lures and spend countless hours learning new techniques with his grandfather. His grandfather passed before Destin reached his teen years.
Destin’s passion fixated on becoming a professional bass angler after watching the Bassmaster’s on TV as a child. After his football injury, he continued his journey to reaching the highest levels of the sport. Destin started at the local level; he founded a competitive college bass fishing team at Gannon University in Erie, PA. He constantly researched and worked on improving not only his fishing abilities, but also furthering his sales and marketing skills. Destin took classes and contines to work with companies in sales, marketing, and social media management.
His career as a co-angler took him across the country to fish some of the top bass fisheries where he met some amazing people along the way. Many of the people he met fishing the BASS and FLW circuits are some of his greatest friends to this day. Through being a co-angler, Destin was able to lessen the learning curve immensely towards reaching the professional ranks.
After four successful seasons as a co-angler at the National level, Destin made the jump to the pro side. For his first season, he entered the Bassmaster Northern Opens and the now FLW Costa Northern Series with the primary goal of qualifying for the Elite Series. It was truly a trial by fire that first year with some great successes but a lot more lessons learned. That first season he finished 8th overall in the Bassmaster Northern Opens series, narrowly missing his goal of reaching the Elite Series; he also qualified for the FLW Costa National Championship. After competing with many of the best anglers in the world, he truly knew that he belonged.
One of Destin’s other passions is sharing his love of bass fishing with others. Whether it is answering questions, fishing with kids, or taking his guide clients out, he truly loves every minute of it.
Destin received his U.S.C.G. Captain’s license shortly after college and has been helping to create lasting memories on the water for his clients on Lake Erie in Pennsylvania and most recently the St. John’s River in Florida. After his first season in the professional ranks, he went to Florida to learn more about some of the tournament venues while fishing the Bassmaster Southern Opens and guiding on the St. John’s River.
It’s a new year and Destin’s focus is still on the prize: the Bassmaster Elite Series. His tournament season takes him back to the South starting out with the Bassmaster Southern Opens before heading back to Pennsylvania to kick of the Bassmaster Northern Opens season later on in the year. You can find him guiding on the St. John’s River in Florida again this winter along with Lake Erie and Presque Isle Bay starting in May.
