Presque Isle Bay Fishing Report May 11, 2015

Posted by admin on May 11, 2015

The weather was too perfect not to go fishing on Monday, so I hooked the boat up and went to Presque Isle Bay to scout for an upcoming guide trip.  I arrived in the late morning for the impromptu trip to find many other angler’s had to the same idea as I had.

The air temperature got up into the 80s and with the recent warm spell the water temperature was in the upper 60s, which had jumped up nearly 20 degrees in a matter of only a couple weeks.  I fished some of my deeper areas, catching a few smallmouth, but nothing too exciting, so I headed in shallow to see if the fish were roaming the flats.

In no time that proved to be the case.  Tons of smallmouth were up on the shallow flats either spawning or roaming around spawning areas.  I soon figured out bait and color didn’t matter all that much as the fish were aggressive and fairly easy to trick.  It was an incredible day with a good deal of quality fish with a few in the upper four pound and five pound class.  They bit all the way up to when I got off the water around eight, just before the storm came in. Tubes and drop shots were the ticket throughout the day although size and color didn’t seem to make a big difference.  -DD
