Mid-July Lake Erie Fishing Report: Big Bass and Walleye Insanity

22 inch Giant Lake Erie Smallmouth Bass with Big Fat Bass Guide Service

Summertime, and the livin’s easy…
Well, if you’re a walleye fisherman on Lake Erie, that’s definitely the case right now.

This summer is already shaping up to be one of the best walleye seasons we’ve seen in years — maybe ever. Limits are being taken daily, and the bite just doesn’t stop. We’ve been mixing in more walleye trips this season along with our first fishing love — bass.

Bass Update:
The bass are in full summer transition. They can be a little picky, but when it’s on, it’s on. We recently boated a gorgeous 22” Lake Erie bronzeback that looked like it was built in a lab. Depths from 15 to 40 feet have been key, with drop shots, ned rigs, tubes, and minnow baits doing the heavy lifting. Mayflies are around, but gobies and shiners are still top forage — so “match the hatch” with your presentations and color choices.

Walleye Report:
Walleye are everywhere. That’s not a vague statement — we’ve caught fish from less than 20’ out to over 65’, including some heavy hitters in the 26–28″ class, all while casting only.

While trolling and bottom bouncing are working, we’ve been focusing on marking fish with 2D sonar, then dialing in casting bites using Lowrance Active Target. Find where they’re suspending, match your jigging techniques accordingly, and get to work. Most eater-sized fish are still in that 50-65 foot range, but don’t hesitate to adjust deeper or shallower.

Want to Learn Electronics?
Along with putting clients on fish, I’ve been running more electronics-focused guide trips for those who want to sharpen their skills with Humminbird, Lowrance, or Garmin units (all of which I’ve spent countless hours utilizing). Whether you’re new to FFS, 360 Imaging, or just want to learn how to break down Lake Erie efficiently, these trips are hands-on and packed with real-world applications.

It’s a great way to turn guesswork into confidence — and get more out of your investment in technology.

Big Thanks to Doc’s Tackle
A special shoutout to David Lortscher from Doc’s Tackle for letting me borrow his beautiful Vexus DVX22 to run a larger group trip. Doc’s is a fantastic family-run tackle shop in the Finger Lakes with all the northern staples — plus some rare JDM gear and premium hard-to-find baits.

Looking ahead, I may offer select larger group trips in fall aboard this rig, especially for jigging lake trout and casting for Fall Brawl walleye – hit us up for more details. My Phoenix remains the go-to, but this opens up exciting new options for groups needing more space.

Thank You to All July Clients
It’s been a busy start to summer, and I’m incredibly thankful for everyone who’s made the trip from across the country. We still have a few July spots available, and August and September are open for booking.

Whether you’re chasing bass, hunting trophy walleye, or planning a fall lake trout or perch trip — we’d love to fish with you this season.
